It’s been a crazy busy summer here in the north, but we’ve got Frank Schultz, Temple Dillard, Zach Kenner, and Nick Muche for what is becoming an annual pre-sheep episode as we sit on the brink of the fall hunting seasons getting rolling. Enjoy!
In this episode I get to catch up with John Whipple, of 49mm creative, who was on an early episode of Tundra Talk, following our goat hunt on Kodiak in March of 2018. We talk about what John’s been up to lately (which includes some firearms and bear defense instruction), as well as how hunting in Africa compared to the hunting we are used to here in Alaska.
In this episode, Frank Schultz, Rob Simard, Nick Muche, and I discuss our bear hunting misadventures up to this point in what has been a crazy busy spring. Enjoy!
Here is a link to the Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor phenomenon that we discuss:
In this episode we get to hear about some squirrel shooting from my son Jed, then Matt Herkstroeter and I talk about how fast the transition from winter to spring/summer is here, the million things we’ve been up to, and of course plenty of spring bear hunting talk. Enjoy!
In this episode I’m joined by Larry Bartlett to hear some more detailed information on the looming closure of federal lands in units 23 and 26A for non-local caribou hunters. This is a heated issue, but an important one, and the effort to keep non-local hunters out doesn’t seem to be supported by evidence. We fully believe in the need for rural residents to have first priority at times when caribou numbers are down, but they aren’t. This was pressed for time and Larry has some amazing stories and experiences, but it was important to squeeze this in while we still have time. If you can call in to give feedback at the meeting, it is from 3pm-7pm (or until the end of public input) (AK time zone), please do.
Public Hearing Information:
Friday, April 23, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. (or until the end of public participation) Teleconference: Toll Free: (877) 918-3011 Passcode: 8147177
In this episode I’m joined by the crew, Dr. Frank Schultz, Nick Muche, and Temple Dillard. We’re all antsy and ready for spring and hit on a number of topics including (state-level) fish and game proposals, and just being wound-up and needing to make some new hunting stories.
I plan on following up with more detailed discussion on the current proposal to close caribou and moose hunting for non-locals in unit 23 and 26A, but below are links to the announcement (along with contact and meeting info), as well as to my article on outdoorlife.com discussing the issue (that also contains links to pertinent herd information).
In this episode, I sit down with Connor, Christina, and Adam Owen to hear their stories from both of the hunts that Christina drew tags for last year, and her transition from southern California to full-blown Alaskan brown bear killer. Enjoy!

In this episode, we recorded in Frank’s newly finished man cave and talk about everything from hunting with our kids, to mountain boot insoles, taking time to glass, and how we generally do NOT dress to impress in Alaska. Enjoy!
